With the historic visit of the Pope to Bamenda scheduled for April 16, 2026, health authorities and emergency responders in the North West Region have officially transitioned from strategic planning to full-scale operationalization.
During the sixth preparedness meeting that held on April 7, chaired by the Regional Delegate of Public Health, Dr. Ambe Lionel, officials of the Incident Management System – IMS were instructed to immediately deploy their teams. This “mammoth event” is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of faithful, necessitating a high-level activation of the region’s emergency and public health frameworks.
A central pillar of the readiness strategy is the establishment of a robust medical network capable of handling mass casualty incidents. Specialized emergency units are being set up at the Bamenda Airport and the Regional Hospital, with a projected capacity to manage up to 200 emergency cases simultaneously.
While a draft Mass Casualty Incident – MCI plan is currently undergoing final validation, authorities are equally identifying strategic sites for trauma and referral centers. To ensure rapid response, ambulance teams and medical personnel will be strategically stationed at high-density locations, including the Cathedral and Commercial Avenue.
Logistical and human resource mobilization is advancing rapidly to meet the demands of the large-scale gathering. Nursing students have been enlisted as volunteers, and a comprehensive training schedule is underway, featuring basic life support refreshers and simulation exercises coordinated by the Red Cross.
Despite these strides, local authorities are working to close remaining gaps, such as the procurement of additional identification jackets and medical tents. Collaboration with key partners like the Cameroon Baptist Convention – CBC remains a vital component in securing the necessary supplies and protective gear.
As the countdown to April 16 continues, risk communication and public safety have become top priorities. Public health messaging has been developed to guide the community, with plans for wider media dissemination to ensure every attendee is aware of safety protocols.
Daily coordination meetings under the IMS structure will continue until the Pope’s arrival to refine deployment plans and ensure a seamless response system. Regional authorities have reassured the public that every measure is being taken to guarantee that this significant spiritual event is both safe and well-coordinated.
