​In a high-level diplomatic move to revitalize bilateral ties, the Speaker of the National Assembly of Cameroon, the Right Honourable Theodore Datouo, received the British High Commissioner to Cameroon, His Excellency Matthew Woods, at the parliament buildings in Yaounde.

The audience, which marked the diplomat’s first official visit since the Speaker’s election, focused heavily on strengthening and dynamizing the long-standing historical relations between both nations. Both officials underscored their commitment to steering this relationship into a new era of mutually beneficial cooperation spanning good governance, economic investment, and environmental protection.

​High Commissioner Woods expressed strong appreciation for the Speaker’s progressive opening address at the Second Ordinary Session of the 2026 legislative year. The British diplomat specifically lauded Parliament’s focus on crucial national issues, including robust parliamentary oversight, necessary land tenure system overhauls, and structural reforms within the mining sector.

He equally expressed the need for both parties to seek solutions to the devastating effects of climate change which plunges the population is desolate solutions. He equally expressed the wish for their partnership to yield employment opportunities for their various population.

In response, Speaker Datouo reaffirmed the legislature’s pivotal role in driving national development, echoing the transparent mining vision of the Head of State, His Excellency Paul Biya, while actively encouraging increased British institutional investment in the key sectors of infrastructure and finance.

​Economic growth, small business support, and youth empowerment featured prominently during the strategic parliamentary discussions. High Commissioner Woods reiterated the United Kingdom’s firm commitment to a constructive economic partnership, pointing out the existing contributions of British enterprises toward job creation, notably within the Adamawa Region.

Looking forward, the partners designated youth employment as a paramount development priority, pledging to facilitate opportunities for young entrepreneurs and share specialized British expertise to boost local industrialization, particularly in the domestic transformation of cocoa and coffee cash crops.

​Turning to pressing global issues, the leaders aligned on climate change mitigation, specifically highlighting the desperate need for increased international financing and unified conservation efforts to preserve the ecologically vital Congo Basin. To convert these high-level talks into immediate action, Speaker Datouo instructed the Cameroon–Great Britain Parliamentary Friendship Group to begin immediate working sessions with the British High Commission, while also scheduling a special parliamentary plenary session to elevate climate change awareness. The strategic audience concluded with a shared vision of progress, witnessed also by Hon. Cecilia Njumbe, a key member of the bilateral friendship group.
