A decisive milestone in the protection of women and girls was achieved in Cameroon on July 8, 2026, as key stakeholders united to transform national indignation into tangible political action.

Moving beyond mere advocacy, civil society organizations joined forces with government officials to demand a robust, standalone legislative framework targeting Gender-Based Violence – GBV. This collective push aims to reshape public policy, turning long-standing political commitments into effective, legally binding protections for vulnerable women and girls across the country.

The ambitious advocacy campaign is championed by the Club of Ambassadors for Positive Masculinity – CAMP in partnership with the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and the Family – MINPROFF and Plan International Cameroon. This strategic alliance has also drawn vital structural support from influential national and international partners, including the German Development Cooperation – GIZ, the United Nations Population Fund – UNFPA, the Cameroon Association of Female Lawyers – ACAFEJ, and the Central African Network of Young Feminists – REJEFEMAC. Together, these institutions are leveraging their combined expertise to demand the swift adoption of a specific GBV law.

For decades, women and girls in Cameroon have continued to endure systemic violence that disrupts lives, shatters dreams, and weakens entire community structures. Stakeholders emphasize that the nation has reached a critical tipping point where passive observation is no longer an option. By elevating GBV from a societal grievance to a top-tier political priority, the coalition intends to construct a definitive legislative rampart that will shield current and future generations from institutional gaps in justice.

For Plan International Cameroon, this initiative aligns seamlessly with its core strategic influence priorities, which center on eradicating gender-based violence, protecting girls’ rights, and fostering female leadership.

The organization maintains that every girl deserves the right to grow up in a safe, dignified environment free from intimidation and harm. By institutionalizing these protections into formal Cameroonian law, the coalition seeks to build a more equitable, inclusive social ecosystem where human rights are guaranteed for all.

While institutional leaders dominate public discourse, advocates also paid tribute to the countless quiet actors working tirelessly behind the scenes to drive this legal reform. True, sustainable societal transformation is often built by unsung heroes who quietly bridge gaps, establish synergies, and provide grassroots support.

As the draft legislation moves forward, the combined resilience of both public figures and grassroots activists promises to finally deliver a future where Cameroonian women can live in dignity, security, and equality.
