A wave of profound indignation has gripped Cameroon’s political capital Yaounde following the alleged sexual abuse of a three-year-old pre-nursery pupil on May 25, 2025, at the Olympic Glory Bilingual Nursery and Primary School in the Odza neighborhood.

The harrowing incident sparked massive street protests, drawing crowds predominantly of women who marched to the school with the Ministry of Basic Education to denounce violence, rape, and kidnappings targeting minors.

Demonstrators blocked traffic for hours to demand absolute accountability, prompting an immediate deployment of law enforcement led by the Yaounde IV Divisional Officer, Akondi Elvis Mbahangwen, to restore public order as tensions threatened to boil over.

The tragic case has quickly evolved into a high-stakes administrative and political crisis, forcing the highest echelons of regional government to intervene directly. The Minister of Basic Education, Professor Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa, alongside the Governor of the Centre Region, Naseri Paul Bea, convened an emergency crisis meeting directly on the school premises.

Backed by an active field investigation launched by the Regional Delegate for Basic Education, this direct involvement by top-tier authorities suggests that the administrative response has surpassed standard bureaucratic channels. Tough sanctions regarding the future operational status of the private institution are expected to be announced in the coming hours.

In a stark contrast of narratives, the school’s management has publicly denied that any abuse occurred on its campus. According to the institution’s official version of events, the toddler was picked up normally by her father at 1:30 PM, and it was only later at 5:00 PM that the mother returned to report the alleged assault.

The school further alleges that the mother refused to wait for the campus coordinator, issued threats to burn down the facility, and subsequently orchestrated a digital campaign to tarnish the school’s reputation. This friction culminated in the school administration filing a formal cybercrime lawsuit against the grieving mother for inciting public backlash online.

Amidst the growing institutional standoff, the legal community and close family representatives have thrown their weight behind the victim to ensure transparency. Luc Patrick Evina, speaking on behalf of the family, reiterated that the mother is demanding nothing short of total justice despite the school’s retaliatory legal maneuvers.

Crucially, the Cameroon Bar Association released a scathing public statement warning against an alarming nationwide surge in sexual violence against minors, citing recent horrifying cases across Yaoundé, Douala, Bangangté, and Momo. The Bar Association fiercely condemned informal out-of-court settlements that protect predators and called for unyielding judicial firmness from magistrates and investigators.

Ultimately, this shocking incident has reignited a critical national conversation regarding child safety and strict background checks for educators within Cameroonian schools. The tragedy mirrors the painful memory of young Divine Mbarga Atangana, whose suspicious death in March left the country reeling.

To prevent similar lapses in child protection, the Bar Association has launched a specialized legal assistance unit to guide the toddler’s family through the impending court proceedings. As a formal Gendarmerie investigation actively uncovers the facts, the public remains vigilant, viewing the outcome of the Bagofit-Odza case as a defining test for the protection of minors within the national academic system.
